Baba Nyonya Tiles Series

This series pays tribute to the rich and distinctive Baba Nyonya (Peranakan) culture — a vibrant legacy born from the fusion of Chinese and Malay traditions. Rooted in the historical Straits Settlements of Penang, Melaka, and Singapore, this unique cultural heritage stands as a proud symbol of Malaysia’s diverse identity, alongside icons like Batik and Songket.

The design motifs are inspired by the intricate ceramic tiles found in traditional Baba Nyonya homes. Known for their refined aesthetic, the Peranakan community had a deep appreciation for elaborate yet harmonious artistry. Even the tiles that adorned their walls were carefully crafted — hand-drawn, colorful, and richly detailed.

In this collection, the designer reimagines these traditional tile patterns as wearable art, reviving a fading cultural treasure and reintroducing it to contemporary audiences. Through this modern interpretation, the essence of Baba Nyonya elegance lives on — not just as decoration, but as a meaningful expression of heritage.
